hey all. still in the mountains, but fled to hillsville for the day and borrowed a computer at the library for the next hour or so, because this morning i discovered a snake (large, black) in my bedroom which, no lies, was extremely upsetting. they're gross. but it was of the non-poisonous kind, which is good, and since it was a black snake it is good as it means that it's keeping all the other (poisonous) snakes away, as well as rodents like mice and rats who would otherwise eat my food and leaving poop all over the house (and yet they do anyway, but not as much as they could).

i did the same thing when the bears showed up on the lawn: came down the mountain for the day.

i left piper, my sweet, lovely, wonderful, adorable dog up on the mountain: she HATES riding in the car, and since i'm doing a lot of sitting around down here, and wandering in and out of stores she'd just have to sit around outside where i am convinced that someone would steal her. maybe that's just me.

i'm having a great time. i love knose who came up and visited me and we had a grand time (i found one of the sets of earings in the car, btw, so hurrah!). and i still have your shoes. no snakes in them. i'm really glad that you came up, and you're welcome to come again if you want and play more rummy (boo ha ha), and we can muck around in more quarry mud. <3.

i miss everyone like whoa, and i'll see you all in d-town. when i get there. who knows when?

So this afternoon, I was looking for a blank CD to burn some music for Dad, and I came across an unlabeled CD. So I'm like "oh, cool, a blank one." So I put in the computer and, no, in fact it's not blank. It's got 19 tracks of strange German rap on it. I've never heard it before, and when I asked Dad and played some for him he'd never heard it before either.

So: how did a mix of German rap and rock get into my room without my knowledge? How come no one has heard it before? How did it just sit there with none of us aware that it existed? How long has it been there? Where did it come from? ~~Where is it going?~~

knose and i tried to dye my hair blue yesterday. it didn't work as planned. currently, or rather a few minutes ago, i was a strawberry blonde with a green, metallic, seaweed tinge to her hair. i'm trying again, drying with heat like it said to, so currently i look like a young draco malfoy with blue-black hair sitting under a blow drier. huh

in the bathroom with a blue face (you can't really tell though)

this morning -- in my uniform (wootbusboys!)

so yea. will let you know my results.

Katy and I walked into the costume closet during rehearsal yesterday, only to find the flimsy dress rack had fallen over and was all over the floor, so we commenced to cleaning and re-organizing.

Long story short, the big rack that stores coats and dresses fell on my head as we moved it.

There is a lump.

A goose egg, so to speak.

It hurt all that evening (I moved slow and didn’t move my head too much), and today it still hurt today, especially when Mr. Adair smacked it.

My thoughts as it fell: death by coat-rack. Embarrassing.

So in addition to the large gash in the left knee and the growing split in the right, there is a highly awkward hole in the land between the legs and if I sit right, no one can see it (so I prudently ignore it) and the one that appeared today at lunch at my fly, I just found one in the back, right at the pocket.

So my purple target underwear has been pranced about all day. Like the wholly butt pants of Calvin’s.

One of my nearest and dearest was surprised the other day when I arrived at her church to hear her give a sermon at the Youth Service, dressed in a skirt and other Nice Clothes (she was surprised about the clothes, I mean). Apparently, it’s shocking that I own nice clothes. So I would like to state before God and Everybody that: I Own Nice Clothes. I am not sure if I should be offended by her surprise, and her statement (in an amazed tone), “Betsy, you look nice.” What is it with looking nice? I usually look decent.

-5 skirts, various sorts.

-2 sets dress pants.

-several nice shirts.

-1 sweater, dressy.

-1 shawl, also dressy.

-1 coat ‘n tails, v. v. dressy.

-1 dress (too small).

-my granny’s high-school prom dress, made by my great-grandma (Granno)

-a matching dress cape, also made by Granno

-1 pair nice black slip on shoes.

-1 pair cool hand-me-down healed, knee boots that make me 6 feet tall.

I ran over a snake tonight, driving home with my parents from getting ice cream.

When I told my dad that was why I was upset, not the rainy, dark, hazardous driving (still a stressor), he said, “Yea, that’s sad. But it was unavoidable. There were five people behind you, if you didn’t hit it, they would’ve.”

And yet, I still feel bad. How could it know that cars were monsters to be avoided at all costs?

I wish it had stopped to tie its shoelaces or check the time so that the whole mess could’ve just not happened.

The road before me seemed to exist only partially underneath the car, the mists surrounding us pulled at the path, dragging us into a world that overlapped only as I drove home.

My eyes were fixed on this wavering road, only my mind was aware of the magic that flickered on the dark, rainy sidelines.

Lanky giants gathered on the side of the road to watch from amongst the trees, faces were lit briefly by the headlights, staring at me with an intense curiosity, tiny faeries stood in the center of the road, lighting for a second as I passed and I appreciated their presence, they showed me where the mystical road was leading, sometimes mere instants before I had to drive there.

And when it was inevitably over, the other world fleeing with the onslaught of street lights, cars and houses, I silently cursed mankind for chasing off the magic.

moral of the story: don't play with henna.

Apparently, it looks like a hickey.

Why didn’t this occur to me? I walk into work today and Charles walks right over with this face of utter horror and curiosity and says, “What is on your neck?!”

“A henna tattoo?” I replied, confused. Then I got it.

I’ve gone through the day like that. Denise asked me what it was, which launched (of course) a huge conversation about boyfriends whether innocent looking girls (like the counter staff) are, in fact, innocent.

I must scrub the thing off.

( Bear in mind : You had to be there, and it was really really late at night and I was drinking a large sugary, coffee-ish drink. whoa. ALSO: The SERE program is something our military does for Army, Navy and Air Force. It's Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape -- you build up torture resistance and all that while they torture you and you get all tough, eating bugs and all that. Read about it here. I didn't know about that last night, though.)

Navy pilot: So yea, we’re at the SERE program.

Me: Is it fun?

Making friends with strangers and having enlightening conversations (me, an army cook, two navy pilots: the pros and cons of having Velcro patches not sewn, the difference between army and navy orders, SERE program, spicy cinnamon gum; and more)
Anonymity
Having to pee while: a) hold the door closed because the lock broke, b) keep your luggage from being stolen, c) rush, and d) answer the phone (or at least hang up on the caller)
Loaded coffee drinks
Harassed employees
Kids running around, being a General Nuisance

Watching Lord of the Rings, extended edition, all three, straight through until five in the morning is entertaining.

Watching it with a good friend and count the number of gorgeous people is even better (67).

Telling outrageous lies (the army of Rohan wandered over from filming Troy in the next valley) just adds flavor.

Trying to remember where you say that actor before (“What have I seen him in?! This is going to slay me! Like the Trojan army!” – about 3 AM) is obnoxious.

Trying to anything the next day – on 4 hours of sleep – is a bad idea.
